The new Cadence Community enhances the ability of Cadence users to connect and collaborate. In addition to moving the community into cadence.com -- enabling single sign-on for community, Sourcelink and Cadence events -- the new site is organized around nine technology segments, giving you easy access to product information, training, forums and blogs. Registration note: Due to the scope of the enhancements and the new SSO registration system, we were not able to migrate existing cdnusers.org member accounts. So new registrations are required, but this enables a broader set of functionality we think you'll enjoy.

Forum note: Under the guidance of forum moderators, we have taken the 20+ cdnusers.org forums and consolidated them into 11 forums on the new site. Posts have been brought over so you can leverage that posting history. CDNusers forums will be set to read only starting 7/30, and cdnusers.org will be redirected to the new community on 8/4.

Hi there, I am revising a board file that was originally done in June, 2006. There are a lot of shapes on them and they are classified as solid filled. Being a newbie, I'm not sure what this means. They look like they are dynamic filled but don't seem to behave the same way. Should I convert them to dynamic filled or just leave them? Thanks in advance for your input. Jackie

Do you mean Static solid filled? The size and purpose of the shape is also important in determining the type of copper fill to use. Static shapes will reduce the size and complexity of your design file, but they will not automatically update when changes are made. Without knowing the specifics of the design, it is difficult to make a blanket recommendation on the type of shape to use. Dynamic shapes have the advantage of changing with the design, while static shapes take less space, and shape commands fru faster.

What class are the shapes? Etch? or something else?

They are not static shapes, but not dynamic either. They are etch and they update, but not the way dynamic shapes update. I think the board may have been created using V.14. (before dynamic shapes?) I was just wondering if I should change them to dynamic or if I could just leave them.

If they gerber out fine, and DRC properly (after you make ECO changes, I'm assuming you're updating the board right?), I'd leave them alone. Funny things 'can' happen when you change shapes from Static to Dynamic (yes, the older ones are now considered Static).

If all works well now... don't break the 'machine'. :)

I agree with Mitch that the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach is usually the best approach to take. So if your Gerbers read good and you can go to fab with no errors, then there's no reason to change. If the design needed significant changes and the shapes were causing you problems, then I'd consider making them dynamic shapes.
