Many of you already received communications about the move of the Cadence user community into cadence.com. And many of you have already joined, with over 4000 registrations in the first two weeks.

The new Cadence Community enhances the ability of Cadence users to connect and collaborate. In addition to moving the community into cadence.com -- enabling single sign-on for community, Sourcelink and Cadence events -- the new site is organized around nine technology segments, giving you easy access to product information, training, forums and blogs. Some of the new features include:
  • Ability to respond to posts via e-mail
  • Technology-specific blogs
  • Latest Web 2.0 social networking capabilities
  • Public profile options
  • Private messaging
  • Friends lists
Visit the new Cadence Community today at www.cadence.com/community and join the discussions!

Registration note: Due to the scope of the enhancements and the new SSO registration system, we were not able to migrate existing cdnusers.org member accounts. So new registrations are required, but this enables a broader set of functionality we think you'll enjoy.

Forum note: Under the guidance of forum moderators, we have taken the 20+ cdnusers.org forums and consolidated them into 11 forums on the new site. Posts have been brought over so you can leverage that posting history. CDNusers forums will be set to read only starting 7/30, and cdnusers.org will be redirected to the new community on 8/4.

Best regards,
Mike and Tom

Hello,
I'm new to working with Design Entry HDL.  I have a couple of questions about instance names and reference designators.  Thanks in advance for any help.

When I add a part to the schematic, it is assigned an instance name automatically, for example "I2."  When I packaged the design, I see that this caused reference designators to be assigned, for example, the part "I2" now also shows up in the schematic as "R1."

My first question is: Now that the reference designators are showing, is there a way to hide the instance names so they don't clutter up the design?

2nd question: I see that a new attribute was added to my parts, $LOCATION, that contains the reference designator.  But I also see parts with a attribute LOCATION (no "$").  Is the $ important?

3rd question: is there a way to quickly change a group of reference designator values, for example a large group of components I want to designate in order as U1, U2, ... U100?

Thanks for your help!

The instance (PATH property), or any property, visibility can be changed using a number of ways:-

Single item - Text->Attribute, click on the object then change the visibilty on a single item
Multiple items - Create a Group either by selecting items in the Group or Create by Expression, then change the visibility of the group.
All items - use Text->Global Property Display

LOCATION or $LOCATION is the refdes. $LOCATIOn is system assigned by the Packager (Export Physical) to any components that have not been user assigned. User assigned properties are LOCATION. $LOCATION is a soft property, and LOCATION is a hard property - this means that $LOCATION could possibly be changed by the packager if ther's a conflict between a hard and soft property.

To change a group of refdes - the best way is to probably create a group (either manually or by expression), once the group is created you can either text edit them one by one using Group->Text Change OR you can pipe them into Wordpad using Group->Text Change then clicking Right Mouse Button in the DEHDL workspace and selcting Editor. Once you change a $LOCATION value it changes the property to LOCATION - SOFT to HARD.

Thanks!
That was really helpful. One question on changing the $PROPERTY attribute by group: After creating a group, I went to Group-Text Change but nothing appeard to happen. Possibly a cursor appeared in the value field. Could you explain again how would I go about editing all the $PROPERTY values in a group using this method?

Thanks again for all of your help,
Mike M.
