Interview: Key Features in Virtuoso 6.13 Release The Virtuoso 6.1.3 release integrates the Cadence Space-based Router into the Virtuoso cockpit to help users work more easily with sub-90nm design. cdnusers talked with Steven Lewis to find out more about this release.
cdnusers Steve, tell us about your background working with Virtuoso technology. Steve: I have worked at Cadence and on the Virtuoso platform for 18 years.
cdnusers: What is the one new thing designers should know about the release of Virtuoso 6.1.3? Steve: Customers are continually asking for integrated point tools to ensure ease of use, especially in the sub-90 nm designs. We are delivering on our promise of integrated point tools into a complete solution.
cdnusers: Tell us about a new feature in Virtuoso 6.1.3 and how this feature works Steve: We have a product in the company called Cadence Space-based Router. This is advanced cell routing technology that is really great at sub-90nm design. We have integrated this technology under the Virtuoso cockpit to allow custom IC users to use this technology in a familiar environment which can really help with the learning curve and adoption.
cdnusers: Now tell us about a couple more features that users will find helpful when doing their designs. Steve: ExpressPcells are designed to boost the performance of opening and working on large designs. SKILL Pcells is a technology that is both standard within the industry for cell layout descriptions, and unique to the Virtuoso platform. Our customers needed better performance because their designs are growing so large. We gave it to them. We also updated the displays inside our ADE XL technology to give our customers a more “data” centric view of the world. This was devloped as part of a collaborative partnership with Matsushita in Japan but will benefit all our analog customers.
cdnusers: Now some personal questions. How do you concentrate when working? Any tricks? Steve: If I really want to concentrate I have to close Outlook and ignore email for a while. It comes in fast and furious and can become a big distractor.
cdnusers: Where do you do your best thinking? Steve: The Shower
cdnusers: What do you do after a long day or week of working on Custom Design problems to relieve your stress levels? Steve: Work on my stamp collection or do community theater. Sometimes both…but never at the same time!
